Pilgrim Day

There was once an Asturian king, named Alfonso II 'The Chaste', who mounted his horse and made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, where history/legend placed the tomb of the apostle St James the Great. This was during the 9th century and the Asturian monarch thus inaugurated what was to become one of the most important routes of spiritual and cultural peregrination in Europe, embarked upon by millions of pilgrims throughout history right through to the present day. That is why Asturias, more so than any other territory, literally lives up to the saying that 'all roads lead to Santiago'. The age-old Principality has five routes and connections between them: the Coastal Road, the Original or 'Primitive' Route, two connections between these, and the connection between the French Route via the San Salvador Route, in reference to the cathedral of the same name in Oviedo.
